What's in a Name? The Storms Speak

To say that 2017 has been one of the most interesting, fascinating yet bizarre and unprecedented years may just be the tip of the ice berg. On a personal level, it has been one of challenges as evident in my previous post. But perhaps what is currently playing in the saga of this year is the temperature of Mother Earth - ANGRY!

Harvey: meaning battle; strong; ardent; eager to battle; warrior; soldier

Hurricane Harvey started out like most hurricanes - an area of disturbance, forming into a tropical storm (TS) east of the Lesser Antilles. It moved towards the west and was downgraded to a wave 2 days later. But true to it name, it was an ardent warrior, strong-willed and determined not to be cast aside...it was eager to prove a point. Four days later, it was a TS again, and one day after that was a hurricane. It then became unstoppable and one day later made landfall in the US, the first in 12 years, as a powerful Category 4 storm. It moved so slowly that it dumped massive amounts of water on several counties. Roads became rivers. Cars become submarines that were inoperable. Several persons have died - over 45 at last count - and the damage as chronicled in pictures and stories was significant. Recovery will take months if not years. The Weather Channel did a good summary of the event.

Irma: meaning universal; whole; of German origin and derived from word meaning "war goddess"

We thought that Harvey would be the most unprecedented event we'd have to face this year. Then we met Irma. Actually, as I sit and type, it's still unfolding. It has been a disaster and it hasn't yet reached its end. It pretty much devastated Barbuda, where it is estimated that 95% of the island is destroyed. The people have nowhere to live and will have to be relocated to Antigua which was spared for the most part. There was also significant damage to St Martin and the Virgin Islands. God knows what happens next. The meteorologists suggests that will hit or cause serious damage to the Bahamas, Cuba and Florida because of the high pressure system in the north Atlantic. And if the name means something, it may continue on its war path. It has already caused "whole, universal" damage and we can only pray that God spares others from the same fate. Speaking of which...

Jose: meaning "May God increase"; "may He add"

On the coattails of H. Irma is H. Jose. It was a disorganized blob in the Atlantic but the same favourable conditions that created and strengthened H. Irma were at work so it's not very much an organised system. Preliminary projections show that it could possible affect some of the same countries in the Lesser Antilles that Irma did. But we can but hope that God will increase favour in this instance and all countries will be spared.

What's in a name? A lot! The hurricanes have spoken and we heard them loud and clear. May we receive Divine favour that we have seen the worse of what the 2017 Hurricane Season will bring.
