Mirror Mirror

There once was a man - king - named David. Another man - prophet - named Nathan went to him with a story. It goes something like this:

A man - poor - had a sheep that was like a daughter; it slept in the house, ate from his plate and brought him joy. Then another man - rich - had need of a sheep; he left the many that he had and partook of the poor man's ewe...the one and only ewe the man had. David, as expected, cursed the rich man for doing such a wicket act...only to have Nathan lift the mirror to his face. He - David - was that rich man.

David took Uriah's pride and joy - his wife, Bathsheeba...but not only that. He made sure Uriah didn't stand a fighting chance to reclaim her. And that's when Nathan showed him what he did. David then "went into the house of the Lord and worshiped".

The truth is that David was God's. He was hand-picked by Samuel to lead the Israelites. He defeated a tormenting giant - Goliath - with some river stones that a 6 month old baby could hold. He was rich and powerful. And yet, he was greedy. He allowed his eyes to wander where it aught not, and suffered the consequences of this. The beauty of the story is that it didn't end there. David repented and lived as a man after God's own heart.

On reflecting on this story, I was reminded that no matter how many giants we slay and the many battles God has allowed us to win, we will come face to face with elements of who we are that we are afraid to see. Like David, we may first see the flaws in others and with passion condemn those flaws. But in the same breath, we can also have Nathan mirrors pop up - friends, Pastors or the Spirit (through our conscience) - that will convict us of wrongs we do/did, or just the flaws of our person (personality). I'm learning to accept that this is apart of growing, and that I should not let the revelation be my final fate. Like David, we need to recognise the God we serve and go before Him in humility. Then and only then will true transformation begin/continue.

Mirror mirror on the wall...thanks!
